Google has undertaken an ambitious project to enhance global connectivity by deploying an underwater internet cable that will link Togo to Europe. Known as the Equiano cable, this infrastructure aims to significantly boost internet speeds and reliability in the region, marking a major step in bridging the digital divide.

The state-of-the-art cable, named after Olaudah Equiano, a Nigerian-born writer and abolitionist, is part of Google’s broader strategy to invest in Africa’s digital transformation. Stretching thousands of kilometers along the Atlantic Ocean floor, the cable boasts cutting-edge technology, including space-division multiplexing, which allows for increased transmission capacity.

For Togo, this project is expected to have transformative effects. The country stands to benefit from enhanced internet access, which could drive economic growth, improve access to education, and foster innovation. The connection to Europe will also facilitate smoother integration into global digital networks, providing opportunities for businesses and individuals alike.

Scheduled to go live in the near future, the Equiano cable underscores the growing importance of underwater internet infrastructure in connecting continents and enabling a more interconnected world.
